More About us
Abaco Shelter, formerly known as Pop’s Shelter, is a no-kill sanctuary for homeless and abandoned dogs located in Marsh Harbour, Abaco in the Bahamas.
The Shelter was started by Willis (Pop) Weatherford. Pop always had a love for dogs and started feeding the local stray dogs that came by his restaurant in Marsh Harbour. Realizing the plight of the homeless dogs was a bigger issue than he first thought, he sought out a location where he could have a kennel. Having no funds to purchase land, he approached the government for assistance.
In 2010 he was given permission to use the rear portion of the old public dump area of of S. C. Bootle Highway.
Since Pop’s retirement in 2012, the Shelter has continued to grow and flourish as the result of the dedication and hard work of the volunteers.
in 2019, the Abaco Shelter Animal Rescue became incorporated and licensed as a non-profit organization. As the only ficility of its kind on the island it is an extremely valuable resource. Not only does it provide a place for needy dogs to live in safety but also as a place where sick dogs can be nursed back to health.
